New to online slots

I love going to the casino but I've never done any gambling online.  I am in the US and was told that online gambling is illegal for me, but I hear other people are doing it so I'm not sure that's true.

It depends on what state players live in and the State-based regulations. As long as any state does not outlaw gambling then gambling online is not illegal.

That's not true.  The UIGEA ruled all online gambling was illegal, other than certain approved activities such as the lottery and horse racing.  Online payment processors, banks and credit card companies are not allowed to process payments for these gambling activities.  The states may not have the same laws but federal law takes the lead.
